Sangzi Yan

Born and raised in Shanghai, China, and currently based in NYC, my artwork intersects with styling, textiles, and photography. Unbound by medium, they often begin from the inner world, both as a response to the world and as an extension of self-perception.

My inspiration is drawn from the places I've lived and passed through: the city of Shanghai, where I grew up; New York City I’ve lived in recent years; and the cities where I’ve briefly stayed.

The different cultures and everything I’ve experienced, whether pain, joy, monotony, or the fleeting glimmers that emerge from it all, have had an impact on my work.  My projects often carry a narrative quality, becoming a medium for reflection and expression.

My work often goes untitled, and descriptions are kept brief and open-ended. The intention is to invite audiences' perspectives, as each viewing fosters a new connection, a new conversation, and often opens pathways to fresh insights.
